| Christmas is celebrated with joy and grandeur
by Christians all over the world on the 25th of
December. It starts from the 24th of December
midnight. It signifies the birth of Jesus to Mary
and Joseph. Mary had been engaged to Joseph and
she was carrying a baby through holy spirit. Both
Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem to get
registered. While they were there it was time for
Mary to deliver the child. Since accomodation
could not be found in the inn, Jesus was born in
a manger. At this moment angels appeared to a
group of shepherds and mentioned to them that the
Lord was born that night in a manger. Hearing
this the shepherds went looking for the newly
born and they found Joseph and Mary. They told
Mary and Joseph about what happened. The
shepherds returned glorifying and praising the
Lord.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem
wise men came from the east to Jerusalem asking
where they could find the child who would be the
king of Jews since they observed the star at it's
rising and wanted to pay homage. The king of
Herod secretely sent them to Bethlehem. The kings
saw that the star they saw at it's rising lead
them the way to where Jesus was born. The kings
paid homage to Jesus and offered gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh.

| Christmas is celebrated with friends and
family. Christmas trees are decorated with
ornaments and lights. Houses are decorated and
lighted. People go to the church on the night of
the 24h for the midnight mass and offer prayers
to the Lord. Carols and songs are sung in praise
of Lord Jesus. On the day of Christmas people
exchange gifts. Kids believe that Santa Claus
comes from the North pole through the chimney, on
a sleigh pulled by reindeer, with gifts they had
wished for and leaves the gifts under the
Christmas tree on the night of 24th. Santa is
portrayed as an overweight, bearded, jolly man
dressed in a red suit with white trim. He greets
people with a "Ho Ho Ho". In the
western countries a huge Christmas tree is placed
at an important location in the city. Cultural
events are held during the period. The cities are
decorated with lights and wear a festive look
during the holidays. Santa Claus is seen in the
shops and gatherings. |
