Area
- The area of Mangalore
taluk encompasses 834 Sq. Kms.
Population
- The male population
is 3,72,313 and female population is 3,87,392
totaling to 7,59,705.
- Among the total
population, 3,03,396 belong to the rural area and
4,56,309 reside in the urban area, 2,82,297 are
workers and 3,81,475 are non-workers.
- The denstity of
population per sq. km is 910 with a growth rate
of 20.06% during the period of 1971-1981.
- The sex ratio i.e.
number of females per 1000 males is 1041!
Literacy
- Total number of
literates are 5,40,818. The literacy rate is
published as 82.21 which is quite impressive.
- Among them 2,54,818
are women with the published literacy rate of
75.45% and 2,86,000 are men with the pulished
literacy rate of 89.34%
- 1,97,751 are from the
rural areas with the pulished literacy rate of
76.38% and 3,43,067 are from the urban areas with
the pulished literacy rate of 85.99%.
- Total number of
students attending primary schools are 1,13,102,
highschools are 36,856, leading to a staggering
drop rate of approximately 67.41%, pre-university
colleges are 12,579 with a drop rate of
approximately 65.87%. The total number of
students attending degree colleges are 20,888.
The increase in the number of students can be
attributed to the students who come from all over
India to Mangalore and proximity to acquire their
graduation from the best of the educational
institutions in the country.

- Normal rainfall in
the area is 3427 m.m and actual rainfall in the
year 1998 was 4001 m.m.
- By the end of mid
1999 total number of motor vehicles (cars, buses,
jeeps, lorries, autorickshaws etc.) were 98,586.
- Ground water level
below ground level (in meters) is a maximum of
14.80 and minimum of 0.05. The availability of
ground water is 7525 hectares i.e. 18,142.7
acres.
